How to Train Heavy Without Getting Tight — The Nervous System Approach By Dean Singh | Dean's Mobility Training | Posture to Presence

Last week I trained four days straight. Heavy loads. Deadlifts, split squats, farmer's carries. The kind of volume that should have left me stiff and guarding.


On day four I felt better than day one.

Not luck. Not genetics. A system working exactly the way it is supposed to.

Why Training Hard Makes Most People Tight

Most people who train consistently are caught in the same cycle. Push hard, get sore and stiff, recover, repeat. The tightness becomes background noise until something hurts.

The problem is not the effort. It is loading a nervous system that was never organized to receive it.

Your nervous system controls how your muscles fire, how your joints move, and how your body responds to stress. When it senses instability or threat, it protects. That protection shows up as tension. Research published in the Journal of Neurophysiology confirms this directly — the nervous system modulates muscle tone in response to perceived threat. When the system feels unsafe, protective tone increases and mobility drops.

You are not tight because your muscles are short. You are tight because your nervous system decided tight was safer.

Where Fascia Fits In

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps every muscle, organ, nerve, and bone in your body. It is not passive. It communicates directly with your nervous system through mechanoreceptors — sensory cells that detect pressure, stretch, and movement.


Dr. Robert Schleip's research shows fascia contains up to ten times more sensory nerve endings than the muscles it surrounds. It is essentially your body's largest sensory organ. When fascia is restricted or chronically compressed, those signals distort and the nervous system responds with more tension, more guarding, more protection.


This is why I combine Fascia Stretch Therapy with movement coaching. FST uses traction-based assisted stretching to decompress joints, hydrate connective tissue, and restore the quality of sensory input the nervous system receives. It does not just increase range of motion. It reorganizes the conversation between your body and your brain so the nervous system feels safe enough to stop protecting.

The GEM Framework: Ground, Engage, Maintain


GEM is the framework I developed to bridge what happens in an FST session with what happens in real training and daily life. Without it, gains drift back to old patterns within days. With it, they compound.


Ground is the calibration phase. Before loading anything, you organize the nervous system through intentional movement. Hip CARs, TRX flows, deep lunge work. Not a warm up in the traditional sense — a deliberate process of feeding the nervous system clear movement signals across full ranges of motion. Dr. Andreo Spina's research on Controlled Articular Rotations demonstrates these movements map available range in the nervous system and signal that it is safe to access. You are not forcing range. You are earning it.


Engage is the loading phase. Heavy and intentional are not the same thing. Intentional means position, breath, and full presence on every rep. Research from the European Journal of Applied Physiology shows that internal attentional focus during resistance training produces measurably greater motor unit recruitment. You are not just training muscles. You are training your nervous system to coordinate those muscles under load.


Maintain is the reset between every set. Most people collapse into their phone between sets, the nervous system receives disorganized input and the next set starts from a lower baseline. A thirty second postural reset between sets keeps the system organized throughout the session. The next set starts where the last one ended rather than slipping backward.

What the System Produces


When GEM is applied consistently, the body stops protecting and starts adapting. Strength builds. Mobility stays. Recovery accelerates. And the carry over into daily life is where it gets interesting.


Your nervous system does not separate your training from your working hours. The way you move in the gym is the way you move everywhere. When the system is organized in training, it carries that organization forward into how you sit, stand, breathe, and show up. Posture is not a position you hold. It is the ongoing expression of how organized your nervous system is at any given moment.
